OK Endurocross For Round two, I was pre-seeded based on how I did In Vegas, and had it not been for that, I would have had a longgggg afternoon out in the OK sun. Levi, Ed, my Dad and I piled into the motorhome and left for round two late on Thursday and took along a few bikes for friends of ours along the way.
My lap went pretty well, and I really pushed the bike the whole way. I didn’t bobble much and I just worked it around the track. When all was said and done, I qualified at 10th for the evening show. I was seated into heat 3 with Taddy, Dietrich, and Justin Soule, so it was not going to be an easy feat for me. But out of the gate I got a decent start and actually was fighting halfway through the race for 2nd. Dietrich, Ronald Como, and I came into the rock turn together and they both went down putting me into 2nd, unfortunately only one lap later I would do the same thing and was now back in 4th where I would finish. In the semi I rode hard and actually finished 2nd, but only first went on to the final. This put me into the LCQ where I rode as hard as I could but just couldn’t get into the lead for a shot at the final. The heat really took a toll and with the humidity, I was just burnt out by the end of the night. I finished the LCQ in 5th place, which earned me 7 points towards the championship. I am now prequalified for round three and I am at 11th overall in championship points. Invaders Desert Scramble The invaders race was in one of my favorite off road places, and the heat this weekend was literally about 100 degrees. The lack of humidity was a good thing for me however, and I felt like I could really hang it out for a long time no matter how warm it was. Off the start I was feeling really good. I had a first kick start, and I felt like I got out fast, but literally 20 yards later Kendall Norman boxed me out and forced me into the dust. By the end of the bomb I was in about 5th, and I could see way off in the distance about 8 riders who were way off course and cutting my off by about a ¼ mile. Basically my whole first loop was in the dust. I got around Ryan Kudla right out of the bomb, about 4 miles in and then started to work on Colton Udall. Colton did a good job of holding me off but into check two he took a wrong turn and I got right past him. Justin Imhof was ahead of me, and i know that he knew I was there. He just kept dusting me out every time I would get close. Finally into check three I tried to make a move, but he just dusted me out again, and I got stuck behind him basically into the pits.
Ed and my dad did a great job with the bike prep this week, and as we speak they are out back in the green truck getting ready for Indy which is only 5 days away! This week I will be heading to Indy and then Illinois for a local hare Scrambles event. They ended up coming late because the injectors went out on their pickup, and they had to leave the trailer at home. They came from Vegas, and Levi got in the truck with Ed to make the 40-hour drive to Indy. We got to show off Ryan’s new bike this weekend- basically the project bike (2005 KX250) for Levi and I all summer. We rebuilt everything on it, including powder coating the entire frame and swingarm. It was a good learning experience in getting the bike torn down, and with Ed’s help it looked brand new again. The big story of the weekend, and most of Southern California was the “extra security” and BLM onsite. After the accident last weekend, it was big to have the needed BLM requirements followed, and with those came a whole bunch of TV crews. The race went off perfectly, and BLM had nothing but good things to say. If anything it was good for us as it gave District 37 some good media attention. I even had a little 5 second clip of me launching off a cliff before the race! The guys from ABC asked me to do something cool, so I went up the hill and jumped off the biggest rock. It actually made the cut for the 11PM report, so I was stoked! This week I will be training and heading to Indy, so look back to my site for an update in the not so distant future! After missing most of the summer due to a Torn Labrum, the last two weeks have been some of the hottest of the year. Between my trip to Oklahoma where the 100 degree weather-coupled with Humidity worse than anything I have ever felt, and the Invaders Desert Scramble in Lucerne Valley, I am about done with hot weather.
My plan was to be Levi’s mechanic for the day portion and then get ready for the night show and my hot lap at 4. The track was a little bit longer then round 1, and it featured more of a Supercross-type feel. With multiple rhythm sections, and longer runs in between each of the obstacles it was really easy to get into a grove and make the bike do the work, or so I thought. After watching some of the guys struggle through the earlier hot laps, I knew that it was going to take some effort to make things happen.
Out of the pits Kendall had about a 4-minute gap, so Justin and I had a little battle of our own. I got him right before check one on loop two and just poured the gas on and never saw him again. The lappers were tough in the heat as many of them were all over the hills. The second half of the loop I just rode my own race and tried to get as close to Kendall as I could. Into the finish he was waiting for me, but they told me that I was only about 40 seconds back. Not too bad in my opinion considering how far back I was off the start.
